Today is my girl’s 8th Birthday and guess what? She’s NOT having a magician at her party this year! Yea!
Not that I don’t love doing magic for my kids, but it’s work to put on a party AND a show. Hannah Montana has come to my rescue this year.
Today I’m going to be sharing with you a few of the sets that I do when strolling. Many of us will be busy with this type of performing over the next few months and it seemed appropriate.
As I mentioned yesterday, I will be taking some time off this week too. And I’ll tell you what, Zig Ziglar is absolutely right. You get SO much done the day before vacation. I had the most productive day of my life yesterday and it’s shaping up the same way today.
All because I stuck with my plan and had a self-imposed deadline of having everything done before party-time at 3:00 today. The key is to make everyday that productive.
========================================== Strolling Magic:
First off, I refer to this with clients as “mingling magic.” We know what strolling magic is, but it’s confusing to the lay public. I have found that booking it as mingling magic is right to the point and makes more sense to party planners.
Here are a few of the sets that I’m doing now. I change it up a bunch depending on circumstances, mood and, of course, audience.
I do not do weak magic. There is NOTHING in this list that couldn’t be a closer on it’s own. I don’t believe in having “B” material. If it’s not commercial and strong, I keep it for my friends at the magic club or for my mirror.
I received an email yesterday from a very astute magician. He mentioned that I gave great advice yesterday about how to get more shows, but forgot to mention that a great act is the first step.
Please, please hear me clearly on this- I’ve said it so many times that I didn’t think that I had to repeat it – If you do not have a GREAT act (i.e. –product), this marketing stuff will only last so long for you. It will not work for a sub-standard product.
Your act must be the BEST you can do. You must be very proud of what you do. If you’re not, the prospect will know. No matter how good your marketing is!
These sets that follow may read a little “flat” here, but believe me, they are all designed for maximum impact. I apologize if I don’t get all of the credits correct. Most of these I’ve been doing so long and they’ve become mine. It’s difficult to remember exactly where I found them, but I’ll try for you:
Set 1: (my typical starter) Name Card (Richard Sanders) Déjà vu (Gregory Wilson) Marks a Lot Marker Trick (Sanders)
Set 2: Sponge Balls (loosely based on Aldo Columbini’s “Throw in the Sponge”) Coins Across (a mix of Paul Gertner’s & David Roth’s) Ring on Shoelace (NEW addition and VERY cool!) (Cool thing about this set is that all of the props come out of a coin purse frame and go back into it and disappear! My business card appears at the end.)
Set 3: Sponge Rabbits (mine from my book w/ Sinada gimmick and all) Invisible Deck Bead Poodle (Daniel Cros-HIGHLY recommended!) (All of these props disappear after I use them. I use a pull for the rabbits and topit the deck. The poodle is given away)
Set 4: Hundy 500 Floating Bill > Bunny Bill Fold (Sometimes I’ll do a bill switch routine where their bill turns into a mis-made bill and back again with my autograph and all.)
Set 5: Color Changing Deck Box> Stranger’s Gallery> Play it Straight (Both Bannon’s) Multiple Selection (Fusilade is a great resource although I do many of my own things. The kicker is either the card on ceiling or a mercury card-fold to under my watch or someone else’s.)
So there are a few KILLER sets I use. Sprinkled throughout are watch steals, loop work, give-aways like million dollar bills, napkin roses, bunny bills, bead poodles, business cards and more.
This all fits very easily in my pockets without looking like I have much at all.
Some of my other favorites are rubber band stuff, Getner’s handling on the photographic deck, Ninja Rings and a version of Sanders “Fiber Optics.” This kind of stuff is nearby in case it’s a small crowd or I have to do larger groups.
I also reserve some killer effects for the head honchos like a bottle appearance into coin in bottle or typically, my bill in lemon routine.
Also, most of the routines are fairly advanced. I don’t have to worry about someone else doing my stuff in my market because most can’t. That’s an important distinction when planning my shows.
So, as you can see, even if it reads a little flat here, that is some STRONG magic! All very commercial, flexible and easy to carry. I could easily do a 45-minute stand-up show just from what I carry here and have.
