I figured a place with a name like “Merlin” was a natural for a magic-themed promotion … I just had no idea exactly what that promotion might be. Anyway, off and on over the years I’d see this Merlin Motors place whenever I traveled through Saskatoon, always with the nagging thought that “there’s gotta be SOMETHING I can do with these guys!” And then one day I just decided to go on in, find the owner and introduce myself. I was fortunate to find the owner sitting in his office that day in 1986. By the way, that was also the year that Vancouver , British Columbia (where I’d recently moved, and now call home) was playing host to the world fair. To much fanfare, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially opened Expo 86 on May 2nd.  It coincided with Vancouver ’s 100th anniversary and featured 54 Nations, 12 Provinces/States, 14 corporate or specialized pavilions and the largest gathering of entertainment Vancouver had ever seen. I performed at that Expo, as did other magicians including Harry Blackstone, Jr. (I caught his show at one of the open-air theatres there – it was the first time the famed “Blackstone Floating Light Bulb” had ever been performed under those conditions … very cool!!!). Expo 86 was heralded as an unparalleled success. Overseeing the event was Jim Pattison, Vancouver billionaire & CEO of The Jim Pattison Group. Among their many enterprises, The Jim Pattison Group owns a large number of automobile dealerships. In fact, it was the car business that launched the spectacularly successful business career of Jim Pattison.
