“I saw that trick before…”
Here is a topic that gets all sorts of discussion rolling every time it’s brought up. I first tackled it in my Children’s Entertainer Course and it still brings in questions.
How often do you change your show?
I know some magicians have no idea what they’re going to do from week to week. (I’m sure no one reading this type of newsletter is like that.)
Some magicians have three different shows that they rotate in and out depending on their audience.
Still others never change a thing and do the same show year after year.
Personally, I lean towards the later with a bit of the second.
Here’s why…
I just did a last minute show today for a camp that I perform for every year. It’s my local YMCA and I know almost all of the 450 + kids that go there.
They see me at the local festivals and pretty much every event that goes on around town. They also just had me at their camp four weeks ago.
But, the counselors are burned out and they needed a break so they called the kids favorite performed to come save the day J.
No problem. But what should I do?
I change my act once a year. Not entirely, but I add some new stuff and re-vamp some of the favorites each Spring.
There are many reasons I do this but it really all comes down to some great advice I got from a very old magician when I was a little boy.
He told me, “Don’t change your act. Once you get an act that is commercial and strong, stay with it. There is no need to change your act all of the time. People are hiring you because of what you do. That’s what they want to see. That’s why they’re paying you. Change your audience BEFORE you change your act!”
Pretty strong yet very solid advice!
So, what did I do today?
I decided to do my act, but with two changes. I substituted two “middle” routines with two other ones that are equally as strong. They played well and the show was great.
I never once heard, “We saw that one before.” Not once throughout the entire 50-minute show. And remember, they just saw it four weeks ago.
After the show, the kids all came up to pet the bunny and get their prizes. We talked about the new stuff a bit and they liked it all. They all told me which ones they liked best (I always talk to the kids after my shows to pick up tips) and about 50% of them asked why I didn’t do the two tricks I had substituted!
Now that’s cracked me up. Here I am sweating and worrying about repeating stuff for these kids and they wanted to see what they had seen before.
Who can figure?
Well, I think we can.
I design ALL of my routines to fit in with Silly Billy’s great advice, “A routine should be so much fun that when you are finished, you should be able to start the exact same routine all over again and they will want to see it because they had so much fun!”
Now granted, that’s a tall order and one that I am constantly working on. Rehearsing the gags, tweaking the script and above all – keeping it fresh.
That’s a comment I heard this weekend at a private party. The client came up after the show to pay me and she told me how much fun everyone, including the adults, had at the show.
Then she gave me the greatest compliment ever. During the show she said she mentioned to a colleague that she has seen me over seven times. The show keeps getting funnier.
And then she told her friend that I probably did this exact same show at least seven times that weekend and yet it still looked like I was having a blast! Now that’s a compliment and one that I consciously work on. (And actually, it was the eighth time that weekend.)
She didn’t want me to do an all-new show. She hired me to perform at her boss’ house and do the exact same show she had seen get the great results it got before!
So, how often do you change your act?
I believe that many magicians never give their acts a chance to get good.
If you are constantly changing this and changing that, you never have a chance to get it “seasoned”.
We all want to buy and try the newest trick out there. I have trunks full of them and I’m sure you do too. But what is it that our clients are hiring us for? What do they really want to see? The newest trick or a strong, quality show that will entertain their audience?
Sure, there are exceptions to everything. If you do themed shows, the themes should indeed be different. In that case, that’s what the client is paying for.
But for your standard, all-purpose show, keep it the same. Assuming you have a commercial show to begin with. =========================================== 3. Quotes of the Month:
“Ask questions to gain, and maintain control of the conversation. You can’t direct anyone toward a purchase that’s good for them until you get them to tell you what they want.” --Tom Hopkins
“To establish true self-esteem we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.” --Denis Waitley
“We will receive not what we idly wish for but what we justly earn. Our rewards will always be in exact proportion to our service.” --Earl Nightengale
“Be a great listener. Ask questions and listen to the answers.” --Brian Tracy =========================================== 4. Show BUSINESS:
On Track Marketing…
The beauty of this type of publication is that I can keep you up-to-date on what I’m doing while I’m doing it and hopefully, keep you on track too.
As I mentioned last week, my school show mailing is just about ready to hit the streets. It’s all ready to go, I’m just waiting for the right timing.
Next up is the corporate holiday mailing and then country clubs and civic groups.
Remember, we live in basically a “three-month out” world.
The marketing you do right now will determine your income three months from now.
If you are not using a marketing calendar you are not a marketer. You are blindly shooting in the dark.
Do yourself a favor and create one now if you are not using one already.
It will not only keep you on track, but it will also alleviate a ton of stress because you’ll know exactly where you’re headed and when.
Then all you have to do is keep records and you can continuously recreate your successes. It’s really all very easy once you do the initial work.
The final phase is what I say to myself almost very morning and I think it is a Ronald Reagan original, “Stay the Course!” =========================================== 5. Resources You Can Use:

I am a HUGE fan of “Last Comic Standing.” God bless those guys and gals that can do that. That is one tough gig!
Here’s a funny I heard last week…
“I lost 12 pounds over the last few months. Yes, thank you. And I have to thank Dr. Phil. Not for his advice, but because he makes me sick.”
And here are a couple groaners…
What do Eskimos get form sitting on the ice too long? Polaroids.
What do you call Santa’s helpers? Subordinate Clauses
What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho Cheese.
Why do bagpipers walk when they play? They’re trying to get away from the noise.
What has four legs, is big, green, fuzzy, and would kill you if it fell out of a tree? A pool table. =========================================== That’s it for this month <first>.
