The Success in Magic News! “Dedicated To Bringing Your Magic to the PAYING Public!!!” Tuesday, October 2, 2007 Written & Published by Eric Paul http://www.MoreMoneyWithMagic.com
Inside This Issue: Uncomfortable Situation…
Dear
The Philadelphia Magic world has been rocked.
Seriously shaken!
Last week, news came out that one of our more prominent practitioners and full-time pros was arrested for child molestation.
Another victim has come forward and it’s looking worse and worse. It’s been all over the news and I am fielding emails and phone calls from area magicians and clients alike.
It’s terrible, to put it mildly.
I will not mention who it is. I will not assume guilt. He will get his day in court as all Americans deserve.
However, this has shaken me up so much that I feel the responsibility to share some thoughts with you…
This guy’s career is history.
Regardless of guilt or not, it would take a long time to pull out of this. It’s gotten too much press.
But what if he didn’t do anything? What if it’s all just a “misunderstanding?”
There are a few things we can do to prevent any such allegations and complete career suicide that I do on a regular basis. I thought these were just smart business, but after talking with quite a few magicians over the last few days, it’s not standard operational procedure.
And it should be, for all of us!
Before I reveal my tips for staying above reproach, let me just say that if you have a problem, seek professional help and STOP doing magic shows for kids – immediately!
‘Nuf said;
1) Always use the staff restroom at school shows.
My friend, Tim Hannig, gave me this tip years ago and I’ve been practicing it ever since.
Never use the normal kid’s restroom, even just for washing up. It’s just not worth it. The last thing you can afford is for a child to say he saw the magician going to potty. Can you see how this could be misconstrued?
This also applies to night-time shows at schools. Just play it safe and ask for the staff key.
I do the same at public shows. If there are not private restrooms available, wait until an adult goes in and then enter. Make sure you are not in a potentially compromising situation.
It reminds me of Billy Graham. Now he is a much bigger public figure than we are, but we’re not that much different. We are in the public eye, some of us are treated like “stars” in our market. There are some strange people out there that target folks like us.
Billy Graham never meets with a member of the opposite gender alone. Never. If he’s on an elevator alone and a woman enters, he gets off. Now that it relentless intelligence!
2) Watch the security of your computer. Protect your email and firewall. There are many great programs out there that can do it for you.
I received an email from a magician I was doing some critiques for. I opened up the attachment and found inappropriate images within the folder. I’m quite sure he didn’t mean for me to see those.
They may not have even been from his computer. There are very strange people out there and it could have been some form of hacker (I always give people the benefit of the doubt).
Another magician that was in my email address book, was apparently a victim of someone sending compromising emails as if it was him. It wasn’t and I believe it was caught before too much damage was done.
Either way, protect yourself by protecting your computer.
3) Be conscious of how you touch your audience volunteers. This should be pretty obvious but I see questionable things all of the time.
A good example of this is a routine from my show. I use a chair suspension and I am very conscious of how I handle the young lady.
Remember, I am picking her up and laying her down. That could lead to trouble.
I make sure that I pick her up by the arms, not the body. And I am very careful to cover her up immediately with the cloth.
A completely innocent touch or even a glance could be misconstrued by an overprotective parent.
4) And finally, on this not so pleasant but certainly necessary topic – Remove all barriers to your success!
This is a biggie and one that we can all relate to regardless of what type of performing you do.
If you are not wildly successful – doing the shows you want to do and living the life of your dreams – there is probably something very simple standing in your way.
It may be a series of events that need to happen, but there is always a first step. Always.
For me, it’s been smoking. I quit for years and started up again during the divorce. It’s been a thorn in my side, everyday, for a year now.
I was doing some housecleaning on the plane on the way back from Chicago and it became ever so apparent that this is my barrier.
It is inconsistent with who I am as a man. It makes no sense and I had to hide it from everyone in my market because I have become recognizable.
Even my kids are old enough now to give me a hard time about it.
Well, I quit on Tuesday. Yes, it’s been a week and I feel great. There’s no more inconsistency. No more shame.
And after hearing the news about my magic friend, I have never been so resolved to stay this way.
Now your big barrier might not be something like his. I pray it’s not. It may not be a life-threatening addiction like mine either.
But I have yet to coach or counsel with anyone that doesn’t have one thing they could do better, or one thing that they could eliminate that would have a massive impact on their career.
So, <first>, what’s holding you back from the success you deserve?
=========================================== On a lighter note…
In anticipation to the release of “The Chicago Boot-Camp” CD’s which are incredible, I will be doing a special series over the next few days on what I talked about at the conference.
We will break the talk into manageable pieces filled with money-making material. This stuff ROCKS, my friend!
I was blessed with a standing ovation and over the next few days, you’ll see why. I honestly gave them my all.
So keep an eye on your inbox over the next few days, print them out and grab a highlighter. This stuff is gold!
Also, keep your eyes open for the release of the CD’s. At the end of my talk, I gave all of the participants a CD-ROM of my current school show campaign that is totally kicking butt. This one campaign will make me at least $50,000 this year and because of momentum, that will grow even larger.
It can also be used for any market and if you order the CD’s through me, I’ll send the entire campaign to you, free! It’s a no-brainer.
See you tomorrow.
Yours in success,
Eric Paul
