Consider the disadvantages of other kinds of shows… Children’s Birthdays – While it’s relatively easy to book these shows, usually you have low-priced competition competing with you, driving your prices down, you’re in the child’s home, controlling kids on ‘their’ turf is often a BIG issue, and sometimes the homes are hard to find…birthdays are tough! Daycares – While control of the kids isn’t much of an issue, usually the prices most daycares are willing to pay is EXTREMELY low…daycare owners/directors usually don’t respond to traditional marketing, forcing you to cold-call! Ugh! Corporate – While the pay is VERY good, it’s EXTREMELY difficult to break into this market! Also, many adults still assume magicians are ‘only’ for children! Schools don’t offer any of these problems! In elementary schools, the pay is REALLY good, control is not nearly as much of an issue as birthdays, and compared to other markets, is VERY easy to get into IF you know the right techniques! Many aspiring magicians want to do school assembly shows, but their thinking about how to do it and what to offer is VERY flawed! Most children’s/birthday show magicians decide to get into the school market because of the larger audiences and thus (many assume) the larger paychecks. Here’s the truth of the matter: If you don’t give school clients EXACTLY the kind of program they want, then you’re NOT going to be successful in the school market! I am completely, without a doubt, 100% positive that all those benefits and many more are available with my “How To Make A Ton Of Money Performing Magic In Schools System.” Because you’ve probably never heard of me, you’re probably a little skeptical about what I say. Or maybe you’ve tried other “performance systems” from other professional performers, but found many of the patter lines & scripts horribly outdated or just plain awful. For as long as I can remember, I was constantly putting on “shows” for friends and my family. Everyone thought I would outgrow my love for magic but it never happened. I always knew that’s what I wanted, to do magic for a living. My parents lectured me to get a “real job” and concentrate on going to college to build a “real career.” After moving to the Pittsburgh area, I worked for a few years for an aftermarket automotive company that I hated. I was never more miserable! Then, a few years later, I took the plunge and became my own boss, performing magic full time. Then came…a BIG, HUGE change! I became engaged and moved to Niagara Falls to be near my fiancé. Well, that meant I was COMPLETELY starting over from scratch in a BRAND-NEW market, where I had zero visibility. My old approach of getting bookings from whatever market responded would take too long to get me the income I wanted in a brand new market. Most direct marketers will tell you that it’s far easier to focus on one market in your marketing efforts then it is to take the “shotgun” approach of trying to hit everything. I decided to concentrate my efforts on the school market because I had a solid stage act and some experience with different kinds of educational programs…plus school programs offered a much higher profit potential for one show as opposed to birthday & daycare shows.
The Best Day Of My Life…For More Than One ReasonThe wedding & honeymoon were wonderful…I was so excited to marry my fiancé. During the honeymoon, my extremely supportive new wife encouraged me to quit my day job. I was proud of what I’d accomplished—in less than 6 months, I had earned nearly THREE TIMES my wages at my horrible day job…and my wages were respectable for the area I was in. I had done it! I was a success! “The dream” had become a reality. A big part of my success had to do with the fact that I concentrated my efforts on the lucrative school market. Here are just some of the great things about working in the school market: F School programs are during the regular workweek, leaving Saturday & Sunday free for other markets, other projects, or free time to be lazy! F Unlike birthday parties and other private events, the children KNOW they must behave since they’re in school...making control issues much easier for you! F Unlike most private parties, birthdays, and holiday events, it’s VERY easy to create a NEED for your services in the minds of your prospects IF you offer the correct programs! F In my area, one school show usually pays FOUR or FIVE TIMES what ONE birthday show pays!! F By framing yourself as an “assembly presenter” rather than a magician, your level of prestige increases! These and other incredible benefits are open to the school assembly magician. But to reap these rewards, you HAVE to know what schools want. Here’s a bitter pill for most magicians to swallow: If you want to be working CONSISTENTLY, month to month in the school market, you CAN NOT only present “magic shows.” With that in mind, here are the… THE “TOP 10” SECRET STEPS TO MAKING TONS OF MONEY QUICKLY & EASILY IN THE SCHOOL MARKET Step #1: You need to know how to perform in front of a large number of students! Too many so-called marketing “experts” only tell you what you need to know to GET the gig. Well, once you get the gig, you’d darn well better know how to DO the gig, because if you don’t, word-of-mouth will destroy your credibility FAST! When I talk about performing, I’m talking not about just the workings of the tricks themselves but also working from the stage, maintaining eye contact, using exaggerated facial expressions and gestures to reach the back row of the auditorium, and so much more. These techniques will insure that everyone is ENGAGED and willing to pay attention to your show. Only when you understand how to perform on stage will you be a successful school assembly presenter. Amateur and part-time magicians never understand this—they spend too much time perfecting their fancy sleight of hand, when they should be studying professional speaking techniques, stage & theater blocking/stagecraft techniques, how to choose the right microphone, PA system and control techniques - I very often perform for over 400 kids at a time—you’d better know how to maintain control or they’re going to walk all over you! All of this and more is critically important to your success as a school assembly presenter and it bugs me that no one teaches it! (Well, almost no one! In just a few moments, I’ll fill you in on a KILLER resource you can use to learn effective stage/speaking techniques that took me years and thousands of dollars in college tuition to learn!) Step #2: This should go without saying, but you also need a killer act! There are several different approaches to keep in mind when doing this. There are certain things you should do, and more importantly, there are certain things you should NOT do. While stage techniques are necessary as I indicated, you do need good magic effects and good scripting. Without good routines geared toward school assembly audiences, it doesn’t matter how smooth you are on stage—certain effects, like fire, mentalism and many others will turn off your audiences and/or bore them. Knowing what material to use on stage and what NOT to use on stage is critical and I’ve seen countless magicians make the same horrible mistakes year after year. Step #3: You need a reliable act or acts that can set up quickly & easily. This is a biggie! When I was just starting out in the school market, it used to take me 90 minutes to set up my show! Not only was this very tiring, but if the performance area (such as a gym floor) was being used for something else immediately before or after my programs, my set-up time REALLY annoyed the schools. Now, my biggest school show sets up in just under 30 minutes, and schools have to specifically request a larger show like it. Step #4: Also, you need your act and specifically the individual tricks to “tie in” with educational messages based on the school’s curriculum. This is SO-O-O important! Most magicians think schools will just book them all year long for simply “fun” assemblies. Not true! To work consistently in the school market, you MUST, ABSOLUTELY MUST have educational themed programs. That’s not all, either. Again, I must stress: You must have your effects tie-in directly with the messages you convey. On more than one occasion, I’ve read books, courses, and watched videos by supposedly well-regarded school assembly performers state that they prefer to simply do a trick, then lecture the kids on what their program is about, then do a trick, then lecture… This is SO wrong! I’ve had countless school officials tell me they really admire how my effects directly relate to my topic, and especially if they see my customized effects SPECIFICALLY for that topic, then they’re really impressed! Step #5: Create different packages and offers for customers. People like a choice! If you say, “Here’s my act and here’s the price,” you’re going to alienate a large majority of your prospects. Besides, you may think your act is PERFECT, but in the real world, there are going to be different circumstances and situations that will make different packages a necessity. Suppose you have a killer assembly act that plays GREAT for 100-200 students, but a client wants you for a HUGE performance with over 600 kids? (That’s what happened for my very FIRST assembly program in Niagara Falls after I’d moved from Pittsburgh!) Suppose a client wants your act for their school, but your act includes 3 or 4 routines with live animals, and they tell you NOT to bring the animals because of allergy concerns? (That happened to me too!) You need different packages for different markets, different budgets, and different situations. One sneaky little secret is the fact that many times you can present many of the same effects for different programs…it’s all in how you structure your act to your messages. I’ve done it and so can you. Step #6: Position yourself as an “Assembly Presenter/Speaker,” not a magician. There are many, many ways to present yourself as an assembly presenter, and not merely a “guy doing tricks.” Selling yourself as an assembly-presenter who uses magic to illustrate your concepts is CRITICALLY important. A “speaker” or “presenter” is regarded as a LOT more valuable than just a magician! Surprising, but true. How do you create these impressions? Lots of ways. For starters, you need a good series of sales letters, a super-effective phone script to convey what you offer when they call you (not cold calling! Cold calling sucks!), other effective ways to communicate on the phone, the internet, how to conduct yourself at the show, and many other ways to create the perception that you have a respectable business as opposed to a guy doing it part time. Although time-consuming, you can create most of these things for free. Also, for a very large fee, you might be lucky enough to find a professional to write them for you. Having all of these components, both in your speech and how you conduct yourself as well as the other written components, will present your business to prospects in a way that will earn their immediate respect and more importantly cause them to be predisposed to hiring YOU and not “Bob The Great.” Step #7: You need to include teacher “support materials” for your school clients. VERY big secret here! This was such an eye-opening experience for me! By providing support materials to your school clients, you’re positioning yourself further as more than just a magician in the eyes of your prospects. “Perception is reality,” and by creating the perception that you’re an assembly presenter who provides his/her clients with support materials to maximize the effectiveness of the assembly program long after it’s over is a LOT more powerful than the guy who does his thing and just leaves. (Another hidden secret is that they must be relatively short! I’ve seen a couple of others that just went on for pages. Teachers a very busy! These need to be concise, to the point! It took me forever to write mine, but they rock!) Step #8: You need to know who to approach to hire you. This is NOT cold calling! There are schools out there DESPERATE for high-quality presenters. There’s a right way and a wrong way to approach schools. In a nutshell, you need to present yourself as someone who is already a success, someone who’s confident and quite frankly doing THEM a favor by giving them your time! The best part? ZERO cold calling—they came to me! Schools wanted quality programs and eagerly started using my services about two weeks after I initiated contact! Step #9: If you want to be working in the school market all year (minus summer months, of course), then you need SEVERAL different educational programs. I used to think that the only school program I needed was an “Anti-Drug” program. To be quite honest, that was all I’d ever heard of. After several years in the school market, I learned of other programs that schools wanted. I eventually developed several programs, including an UNBELIEVABLY effective and topical program I developed with the assistance of a school. The end result? By having several programs to offer schools, I’ve maximized my possible “ins” to each school. In fact, some schools have had me back as many as three times in a six month span! It’s important to have different programs to offer schools because what one school may ‘jump’ on, another school may not care about. Step #10: You not only need highly effective presentations and scripts for your educational programs, but you need programs for different age groups! This is critical. It’s not enough to just offer these educational programs—you need to back up your claims with PROVEN scripts and presentations for different age groups. It’s taken me years of experimenting with so-called “experts’” materials. Most of it was garbage, and as a result, I had to painstakingly develop each program with very little or no assistance (The shows I have put together were created over 15 years of sweating it out in the real world and many were created in part with the direct input from elementary schools, just like the ones YOU need to target!) All of this may sound like a lot of work but it’s really very, very easy once you know how. The best part is that you can drastically increase both the quality and the quantity of the school shows you’re doing very quickly and easily by using these 10 techniques I’ve given you. Now, you can try to do everything yourself and learn by trial and error like I did. You can buy thousands of dollars worth of courses on school shows and tricks, spend a ton of money on the wrong kinds of programs or you can use a program designed specifically for magicians who are just starting out in the school market that is 100% guaranteed and is already proven to be wildly effective.
